Crazy Custard

25th Feb 2026
This week the boys and girls completed their final “Food for Thought” experiment which focused on custard. The children were challenged with working out whether the substance is a solid or a liquid. In groups the children conducted an experiment with custard powder and water. Adding one spoonful of water to the powder every time, they watched and observed any changes to the powder. After two or three spoonfuls, the children found that the mixture was a mix of a solid and a liquid. We found out that this mixture was called a “non-Newtonian” fluid, liquid but solid when pressure was applied to it. We also talked about what other substances could fall under this category such as quick sand.
