The P6/7 have been really excited about our current topic “Food for Thought”. This past week, the children have taken part in their next experiment. In this task, the children looked at pennies and discussed the best household products to clean them. Following the discussion, the children predicted which solution would work best and thought about how to make sure it was a fair test. In groups, the children tried out the different solutions for 5 minutes and then looked at the results. We couldn’t believe how shiny some of the pennies turned out and were surprised by some of the results. We then looked at the science behind why pennies develop their dirty coating of copper oxide and how it’s the acid in the ingredients that removes the dirt.
