Roots of Empathy
We participate in a program called Roots of Empathy https://rootsofempathy.org/. This award-winning program supports children’s positive mental health and well-being.
Mr Kearney is our Roots of Empathy Instructor who will introduce a class to a baby from our community who will act as a “Tiny Teacher”. The class will get to know the baby through nine monthly visits to their classroom. Over the course of the school year, we will watch the baby grow. The children predict and cheer when their Roots of Empathy baby reaches the ‘developmental milestones’ of the first year: “She can roll over!” “He got his first tooth!” “She can clap hands!” “He can sit up!” “She can wave!” “He can crawl!!”
The children are coached in observing and reading the emotional cues of the baby. Discussions act as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel. Roots of Empathy is founded on the loving relationship between a parent and baby, which is where empathy starts.
Since Roots of Empathy was founded in 1996, over 1,200,000 children have been learning to respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby. Roots of Empathy is a tried, tested and proven effective program that increases children’s kindness, caring, including, sharing and helping behaviours as they develop empathy. Research from three continents shows that as empathy develops, aggression and bullying behaviours are reduced.
This year the participating class is Primary 1/2/3 and Baby George will be visiting us.
#LoveGrowsBrains
We loved meeting Baby George for the first time and learning all about him!
Visit 2 - Crying
We enjoyed seeing George for his second visit - he has grown so much! His neck has got stronger, he has more hair and he has cut 2 teeth. We discussed why babies cry and then sang songs to George which made him smile lots. We also tried some new toys with him and found out he has very good concentration.
Visit 3 - Caring and Planning for baby
We talked about what parents might pack in the baby's changing bag and then we checked with Chantelle - she is a super organised mum! George is now eating some solid foods and has grown some more hair. As always he loved us singing to him and kicked his feet with happiness. We also noticed that he has a very inquisitive personality trait.
Themes 4 (Emotions) and Theme 5 (Sleeping)
We explored the concept of emotions and feelings during theme 4 and how it is okay to express them all. After discussions with Chantelle, we learnt that baby George is a very happy baby who only occasionally gets scared or upset. During theme 5, we talked about the difference between active and inactive sleep and how important it is is to get a good night's sleep. George is now cutting his 5th tooth and is nearly ready to crawl! This rhyme helped us to remember that babies should always be put to sleep on their back:
This is little baby and this is his bed
We always put him on his back
To rest his little head!
